Wintermute secures SEC and FINRA approval, launching a U.S. broker-dealer to deepen institutional crypto market access.

Wintermute, a leading algorithmic trading and liquidity provider in the crypto space, has launched a U.S. broker-dealer entity, securing registration with the SEC and membership with FINRA. This move positions Wintermute to operate within the highly regulated U.S. market, offering institutional clients compliant access to securities and tokenized securities.

The launch builds on Wintermute’s 2025 expansion into the U.S., when it established a New York City headquarters and appointed Ron Hammond, a former Blockchain Association executive, as its Head of Policy and Advocacy. The broker-dealer registration marks a significant milestone in the firm’s strategy to grow its institutional footprint in one of the world’s most tightly regulated crypto markets.

Operating as a broker-dealer in the U.S. requires navigating complex regulatory oversight, including SEC rules and FINRA’s rigorous review process, which examines business models, supervisory systems, and compliance frameworks. For Wintermute, obtaining approval signals readiness to meet these high standards, enabling the company to handle securities and tokenized securities transactions. This could appeal to institutional investors seeking exposure to digital assets within a compliant framework, especially as regulatory clarity around crypto markets continues to evolve.

Wintermute’s move comes amid increasing institutional interest in crypto, particularly in tokenized financial instruments. The firm has already made strides to accommodate this demand, launching its flagship OTC trading platform, NODE, in 2022, and partnering with The Block in 2024 to create GMCI, a digital asset indices provider. The addition of a U.S. broker-dealer capability could now deepen relationships with U.S.-based counterparties and position Wintermute to capture new market opportunities.

While Wintermute has been active in global markets, the U.S. remains a critical area for growth. By securing regulatory approvals, the firm is not only aligning itself with compliance expectations but also signaling its commitment to serving the institutional sector in a regulated, transparent manner. This latest move underscores the growing importance of regulated infrastructure as U.S. institutions continue exploring digital asset markets.
