    Key Takeaways

    • Solana validators passed SGP-0002 to double the disinflation rate, reducing the inflation schedule.
    • CEO Mert Mumtaz pushed Kraken to shift its vote to Yes, securing the slim margin needed to pass.
    • SGP-0003 failed to pass, avoiding the implementation of a new transaction fee model with a burn percentage.

Solana Barely Passes Double Disinflation Proposal

Validators of the Solana network achieved a milestone by passing Solana Governance Proposal 0002 (SGP-0002) in the first vote of this kind.

SGP-0002, titled Double Disinflation, proposed to reduce the inflation schedule by increasing the disinflation rate from the current -15% to 30%.

The proposal, which seemed it wouldn’t pass just hours before the vote conclusion, managed to garner support from 176.29 million SOL (67%) coming from validators, while 66.19 million SOL (25.16%) voted against. 20.63 million SOL (7.84%) abstained.

Mert Mumtaz, co-founder and CEO of Helius, a Solana-focused service provider and validator, alerted that the proposal would not pass, and called out validators randomly voting against it “under a false facade of thinking it somehow preserves extra revenue through yield for them.”

Mumtaz referred to this train of thought as “mathematically nonsense,” declaring that “the people who prefer the quantity of the asset vs the value of it should immediately move to Venezuela and let other SOL holders know how that works out.”

Nonetheless, not all validators opposed the inflation change for this reason. Everstake stressed that they voted no as they disagreed with “the pace of the proposed change, the disproportionate impact it could have on smaller validators, the pressure it may put on staking participation and delegators, and the downside scenarios that remain unaddressed.”

Even so, Mumtaz’s push made Kraken change its mind and shift its vote to a Yes, influencing the vote enough to pass by a slim margin. “After 500 calls in the past few hours we got all the votes in the last seconds and passed the disinflation proposal by a literal hair,” he celebrated.

The other two proposals submitted to a vote received mixed results: The Solana Constitution (SGP-0001) vote passed comfortably, while SGP-0003, titled “Resource and Inclusion Fee,” failed to pass, avoiding the implementation of a new transaction fee model with a burn percentage.
