    Gold’s 50-Year Money-Making Trick Just Went Onchain

    Key Takeaways

    • Paxos Labs launched PAXGy on Sept. 24, opening access to a gold-lending market quoted for 50 years.
    • PAXGy arrives as Paxos Labs says roughly $530 billion of gold sits in ETFs that can charge fees.
    • PAXGy is live on OKX, Uniswap, X Layer, 0x and Ether.fi, with more venues expected to follow.

Gold Lending Has Run for 50 Years. Most Owners Couldn’t Touch It

For half a century, the gold market has produced a lending rate every working day. The strange part is that almost everyone who actually owns gold has been effectively shut out of earning it. Paxos Labs is trying to crack that contradiction with PAXGy, a new PAXG-backed token launched Sept. 24 that gives holders exposure to the institutional gold leasing market.

Rather than paying a return in dollars or another cryptocurrency, PAXGy is designed to appreciate against PAXG. In plain English, someone can enter with exposure to a certain amount of gold and, if the lending strategy produces returns as designed, eventually redeem the position for more notional ounces than they started with. Gold earning more gold: That’s the pitch.

The Market Was There All Along

Paxos Labs spelled out the oddity in an X post announcing the launch:

“Gold lending has been quoted every working day for fifty years, yet is still closed to almost everyone who owns the asset. Institutional minimums, bullion bank relationships, settlement infrastructure. PAXGy changes that. Live today on OKX and onchain on Uniswap, X Layer, 0x, Ether.Fi, powered by Chainlink CCIP.”

Gold lending itself isn’t some new crypto invention. Refiners, jewelry manufacturers, miners and bullion banks borrow metal instead of purchasing it outright and pay a lease rate for doing so. Central banks participate as well. In the World Gold Council’s 2026 survey, 37% of respondents said they actively manage their reserves through lending and swaps.

The catch has always been access. The market runs through institutional minimums, bilateral bullion-bank relationships and specialized settlement infrastructure built for a relatively small circle of participants. The Paxos Labs’ issued PAXGy attempts to shrink that institutional ticket down to token size.

$530 Billion of Gold That Costs Money to Hold

The numbers make the contrast hard to miss. Roughly $530 billion of gold sits in exchange-traded funds (ETF), according to Paxos Labs’ own data, where investors can pay annual fees of up to 40 basis points to hold exposure to metal that doesn’t itself generate income. Meanwhile, tokenized gold has grown beyond a $5 billion market cap and recorded $90.7 billion in trading volume during the first quarter of 2026, more than during all of 2025.

PAXGy takes the next step. Gold backing the structure is deployed to vetted institutional borrowers in the existing leasing market. Returns feed into PAXGy’s exchange rate against pax gold (PAXG), meaning the wallet doesn’t necessarily fill with additional tokens. Instead, each PAXGy is designed to become redeemable for more PAXG over time. Interestingly, blockchain technology isn’t creating the return. It’s opening a smaller door into a market that’s been there for decades.

The Gold Still Has to Go Somewhere

PAXGy is available through OKX Gold Earn and X Layer, as well as onchain through Uniswap, 0x and Ether.fi. Chainlink’s CCIP protocol handles cross-chain messaging, allowing a PAXGy position to move across supported chains without first being unwound. Paxos Labs said more venues are expected to follow.

But tokenization doesn’t make the mechanics disappear. The gold behind PAXGy is being put to work through institutional lending, so the economics ultimately depend on that lending activity rather than gold spontaneously producing income.

That’s what makes the experiment interesting. For 50 years, gold owners could watch a lending rate get quoted every working day while the machinery needed to earn it sat largely behind institutional walls. Now that machinery is being connected to divisible tokens, giving almost anyone a way to tap the market through blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi).

Whether that changes who gets to participate in one of finance’s oldest lending markets is the part worth watching.
