    Key Takeaways

    • Strategy says its bitcoin reserve provides 31 years of dividend coverage under management’s calculation.
    • Its U.S. dollar reserve adds 1.8 years of coverage for near-term dividend obligations.
    • The expanded coverage strengthens the company’s liquidity position while bitcoin purchases remain paused.

Bitcoin Reserve Becomes a Key Measure of Strategy’s Financial Strength

Investors in Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR) are increasingly focused on the company’s ability to support its growing preferred-share obligations alongside its bitcoin accumulation strategy. The latest treasury update presents two possible outcomes: stronger liquidity could prepare the company for future bitcoin purchases, or it may reflect a longer period of balance-sheet discipline. Management’s claim of 31 years of dividend coverage through bitcoin has become the central measure of that financial flexibility.

On July 20, Chaitanya Jain, head of bitcoin product & investor at Strategy, said on X that the company’s bitcoin reserve now provides 31 years of dividend coverage, while its U.S. dollar reserve provides 1.8 years. The update follows his July 13 statement that Strategy Series C Perpetual Stride Preferred Stock (STRC) had 20.4 months of cash dividend coverage, indicating the company’s liquidity position has continued improving as it has raised additional capital.

The U.S. dollar reserve reached $3.225 billion as of July 19, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The company said the reserve is intended to fund preferred-stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt. Maintaining dedicated liquidity reduces near-term funding pressure and limits the need to rely on bitcoin sales to meet financial obligations.

The 31-year coverage estimate underscores the scale of the company’s bitcoin treasury. Strategy continues to hold 843,775 BTC acquired for approximately $63.69 billion at an average purchase price of $75,476 per bitcoin. The estimate depends on the value of the bitcoin reserve and the company’s dividend commitments, meaning the coverage period could change as either variable evolves.

Expanding Cash Position Comes Alongside a Bitcoin Buying Pause

Additional liquidity continued to build through equity issuance during the July 13-19 reporting period. The company sold 2.73 million MSTR shares, generating approximately $263.5 million in net proceeds. No preferred shares were issued, and no activity occurred under the company’s share repurchase programs during the week.

The larger cash reserve strengthens confidence in the company’s ability to meet dividend and debt obligations, but it also coincides with an extended pause in bitcoin accumulation. The latest filing confirmed that no bitcoin purchases were made during the reporting period, leaving total holdings unchanged at 843,775 BTC after the last disclosed acquisition on June 22.

Future SEC filings should reveal whether the expanding cash reserve is eventually deployed into additional bitcoin purchases or retained to provide greater financial flexibility. How management balances liquidity with renewed accumulation will remain an important measure of its long-term treasury strategy.
